Supporting Buddhist Chaplains in Service
The Bodhiyana Buddhist Chaplain Fellowship (BBCF) provides ordination and ecclesiastical endorsement for qualified individuals pursuing Buddhist chaplaincy and spiritual care.
Rooted in the Buddhist traditions, our approach emphasizes spiritual formation, ethical accountability, professional development, compassionate service, and connection with a supportive Sangha.
Whether you are beginning your journey toward Buddhist chaplaincy or are an experienced Buddhist minister seeking professional ecclesiastical endorsement, BBCF provides pathways for continued formation and service.
BUDDHIST CHAPLAIN ORDINATION
BBCF ordination is intended for individuals preparing to serve or currently serving as Buddhist chaplains and spiritual care providers.
Ordination is more than participation in a ceremony. Candidates are considered based on their Buddhist formation and practice, educational background, spiritual care experience, ethical readiness, and commitment to continued participation in the life of the Sangha.
General Qualifications
Applicants should generally meet the following qualifications:

A Master of Divinity (M.Div.) or master's degree in a related field, such as religion, education, social work, psychology, or another relevant discipline.

Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is preferred, generally 1–4 units depending on the applicant's background and area of ministry.

An established daily Buddhist practice, such as meditation, ritual, chanting, mindfulness, or another recognized form of Buddhist practice.

Previous receipt of Refuge and/or precept vows from a qualified Buddhist teacher or temple.

A demonstrated interest in Buddhist chaplaincy, spiritual care, or related service.
Prospective chaplaincy students who have not yet completed all of the above qualifications may also be considered following individual application review.
All applications are subject to BBCF's review and approval process. Meeting the general qualifications does not guarantee acceptance or ordination.
Ongoing Membership
Ordination establishes an ongoing relationship with the BBCF Sangha. Members are expected to:

Maintain an active Buddhist practice and uphold BBCF's ethical guidelines.

Submit an Annual Ministry Report.

Remit applicable annual membership dues.

Participate in continuing education and ongoing formation.

Participate in at least one retreat annually, either through BBCF or another appropriate Buddhist community or teacher.

Remain connected with the BBCF Sangha and maintain good standing with the Fellowship.
Ordination Applications
BBCF periodically accepts applications from qualified individuals seeking ordination as Buddhist chaplains.
Ordination cycles are scheduled based on organizational capacity, candidate readiness, and available resources. BBCF does not necessarily conduct an ordination ceremony every year.
When applications are being accepted, current deadlines and ordination information will be posted on this website.

ECCLESIASTICAL ENDORSEMENT
BBCF provides ecclesiastical endorsement for qualified Buddhist chaplains who require formal recognition and accountability from a Buddhist religious organization for professional ministry, certification, or institutional service.
Ecclesiastical endorsement represents BBCF's formal affirmation that an individual meets the Fellowship's standards for Buddhist ministry, ethical conduct, spiritual formation, and professional chaplaincy.
Because BBCF assumes an ongoing ecclesiastical relationship with those we endorse, endorsement is not automatic. Each application is individually reviewed before endorsement is granted.
Who May Apply?
BBCF considers endorsement applications from:

BBCF-ordained Buddhist chaplains; and
-
qualified Buddhist ministers and chaplains ordained or recognized through other Buddhist traditions or organizations.
Applicants may be asked to provide documentation regarding their education, Buddhist formation, ordination or ministerial standing, professional preparation, ministry experience, references, and other materials relevant to the requested endorsement.
Requirements may vary depending upon the purpose of the endorsement and the standards of the institution or professional organization requesting it.

PROFESSIONAL & GOVERNMENT CHAPLAINCY
BBCF provides ecclesiastical endorsement for qualified Buddhist chaplains pursuing professional certification and service in institutional settings. Applicants seeking endorsement for professional certification or employment may be subject to additional requirements depending upon the receiving organization.
Applicants seeking endorsement for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) or U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) must follow the requirements applicable to those settings.
VA and DoD endorsement requirements are separate from BBCF's general professional endorsement process. Applicants pursuing federal or military chaplaincy should contact the Endorsement Committee before submitting an application to ensure the appropriate process and requirements are followed.

MAINTAINING ECCLESIASTICAL ENDORSEMENT
Ecclesiastical endorsement represents an ongoing relationship between BBCF and the endorsed chaplain.
Endorsed chaplains are expected to maintain good standing with BBCF, uphold the Fellowship's ethical standards, remain engaged in appropriate ministry and professional development, and complete applicable annual reporting requirements.
BBCF endorsements are issued for a defined term and require renewal. Renewal is not automatic. Endorsed chaplains are responsible for requesting renewal in writing according to BBCF requirements before their current endorsement expires.
Specific requirements for maintaining and renewing endorsement are communicated to endorsed chaplains through BBCF's endorsement materials and administrative communications.
